Windows 10 Still Vulnerable to Bug Dating Back to Windows 8

Online security experts recently discovered a chink in Microsoft’s armor – something that has been plaguing the system since Windows 8. With Microsoft pushing its customers to update to Windows 10 from Windows 7 for its more superior default computer defense, this news does not help.

Experts believe this would have been ideal if Windows 10 had properly executed its Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) system. Used by Windows, Linus, Mac, iOS, and Android; ASLR prevents attacks that lean on executing codes on predictable memory banks by booting applications from random addresses.

Microsoft has been employing ASLR since Windows Vista came out; but an error started in Windows 8 whenever it started Force ASLR or system-wide mandatory ASLR.

What was meant to aid in applications that are not compatible with ASLR turned into a disaster for Microsoft as it did not perform its intended purpose – programs relocated to the same location every time it was executed.

Computer security experts also discovered Windows 7 to be better at this aspect than Windows 10 – even deeming it worthless in the later version of the system. While the situation might seem dire, there have been several workarounds published online.

Here are a few tips on maximizing your Windows 10 computer’s defense:

• Ensure your computer has the latest certified silicon chip
• The computer’s processor should have a 64-bit setup
• The chip needs Intel VT-d, AMD-Vi, or ARM64 SMMUs to support virtualization
• Intel VT-x with extended page tables, or AMD-v with rapid virtualization indexing for virtual-machine extensions
• For Trusted Platform Module version 2.0, Intel PTT, AMD, or a trusted platform module from Infineon, STMicroelectronics, or Nouvoton
• Systems should implement cryptographically verified platform boots
• A minimum of 8GB of RAM
• A minimum of version 2.4 of unified extension firmware interface
• All drivers should comply with the HVCI
• Systems should be able to support the Windows UEFI firmware capsule update
